Condoms will only provide protection for some sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and only when used properly. Condoms can be used as a barrier against an STDs that is passed on my sexual intercourse, but only in the area to and from what is properly covered.
Unprotected bodily areas are still susceptible to many STDs. Many STDs are transmitted through contact other than the area covered by a condom such as open sores, through blood transfusions, the sharing of unclean needles, and even through salavia.
A latex condom can help protect against some of the most lethal STDs such as HIV. In the case of HIV, transmission routes for this STD almost always involve the penis. HIV cannot spread through unbroken skin. A properly worn condom can protect against HIV transmission because the vagina and anus are the most common pathways by which HIV is transmitted.
Other STDs, even viral infections, can be prevented with the use of latex condoms as a barrier. Some microorganisms and viruses are small enough to pass through the pores in natural skin condoms, but are still too large to pass through latex condoms.
